key note speaker - maude barlow
CWRA is pleased to announce that Maude Barlow has been confirmed as keynote speaker to open the conference on Tuesday, June 17.
Maude Barlow is the National Chairperson of the Council of Canadians, Canada's largest public advocacy organization, and the founder of the Blue Planet Project working internationally for the right to water. She serves on the boards of the International Forum on Globalization and Food and Water Watch and is a Councillor with the Hamburg-based World Future Council. Maude is the recipient of six honorary doctorates as well as the 2005 Right Livelihood Award (known as the "Alternative Nobel") and the best selling author or co-author of 16 books. Her latest are: Too Close For Comfort, Canada's Future Within Fortress North America, and Blue Covenant: The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for the Right to Water.
In her Keynote Address on The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for the Right to Water, Ms. Barlow will outline the global water crisis - what she calls "the greatest human and ecological crisis of our time" - and the steps we need to take to avert catastrophe. Maude will also share her concerns about the multiple threats to Canada's water and what we need to do to protect it.
CSHS session: healthy peatlands for healthy watersheds: processes and analysis tools
In Canada, peatlands cover 11 percent of the country’s surface area (approximately 113 million hectares) and comprise over 75% of Canada’s 148 million hectares of wetland area. These important ecosystems are essential to the health of many Canadian aquatic ecosystems. Peatland hydrology can be complex, but it is often believed that peatlands can act as filters, and water retention areas, thereby contributing in minimizing sediment and other pollutant loadings in lakes and rivers located downstream. The Canadian Society for Hydrological Sciences is sponsoring a session at the 2008 Canadian Water Resources Assocation annual general meeting. The session will focus on the following aspects of peatlands:
- hydrology and hydraulics
- harvesting and restoration
- water chemistry
- acid deposition
- climate change and the role of peatlands
Interested participants are invited to submit abstracts.
The Canadian Society for Hydrological Sciences (CSHS) is an affiliated society of Canadian Water Resources Association. Members are interested in the hydrological sciences that encompass physical, chemical and biological processes in both surface water and ground water, and in land surface/atmosphere interactions. The CSHS is also associated with the Canadian Geophysical Union (CGU) via linkages with the International Association of Hydrological Sciences (IAHS) and activities such as the Prediction in Ungauged Basins (PUB) initiative. The CSHS is dedicated to the advancement and recognition of hydrological sciences and provides a linkage between hydrological research and applications.

Maude Barlow est la présidente nationale du Conseil des Canadiens, la plus importante organisation de défense d’intérêts publics au Canada, et la fondatrice du projet Planète bleue, une initiative internationale de défense du droit des personnes à l’eau. Elle siège aux conseils d’administration du Forum international sur la mondialisation et du Food and Water Watch et elle fait partie du Conseil du monde futur, un organisme dont le siège social se trouve à Hambourg. Maude détient six doctorats honorifiques et elle a reçu le Right Livelihood Award (le « Prix Nobel alternatif ») en 2005. Dans son discours principal sur The Global Water Crisis and the Coming Battle for the Right to Water (La crise mondiale de l’eau et la bataille à venir pour le droit à l’eau), Mme Maude Barlow donnera un aperçu de la crise mondiale d’eau, qu’elle considère comme « la crise humaine et écologique la plus importante de notre temps », et des étapes que nous devons prendre pour éviter la catastrophe. Maude Barlow partagera aussi ses préoccupations à l’égard des multiples risques qui guettent les ressources hydriques du Canada et ce que nous devons faire pour les protéger.
SCSH Session: la santé des tourbières et de leur basins versants: processus et outils d’analyse.
Les tourbières couvrent une superficie de 113 millions d’hectares au Canada, ce qui équivaut à 11% de la superficie du pays. Cela représente 75% des milieux humides canadiens. Les tourbières sont de première importance pour la santé de plusieurs écosystèmes aquatiques. L’hydrologie des tourbières peut être complexe. On pense généralement qu’elles agissent comme un filtre, qu’elles permettent la rétention de l’eau et conséquemment, qu’elles contribuent à réduire les charges sédimentaires et autres polluants dans les lacs et rivières situés en aval.
La Société canadienne des sciences hydrologiques organise une session de conférences durant le congrès annuel de l’ACRH de 2008. Cette session portera sur les aspects scientifiques suivants reliés aux tourbières:
- Hydrologie et hydraulique
- Récolte de la tourbe et restauration
- Chimie de l’eau
- Déposition acide
- Changements climatiques et le rôle des tourbières
Les participants intéressés peuvent soumettre un résumé.
La Société canadienne des sciences hydrologiques (SCSH) est une société affiliée à l’ACRH. Les membres sont intéressés par les sciences hydrologiques qui incluent les aspects physiques, chimiques et biologiques des eaux de surface et souterraines, de même que l’interaction entre les eaux de surface et l’atmosphère. LA SCSH est aussi affiliée avec l’Union géophysique canadienne (UCG) par le truchement de ses liens avec l’Association internationale des sciences hydrologiques (AISH) et des activités tel que l’initiative sur la prévision sur les bassins non jaugés (PUB). La SCSH a pour objectif l’avancement et la reconnaissance des sciences hydrologiques et établit des liens entre la recherche et les applications hydrologiques.
